The real story behind this movie is what potentially makes it worth a shot as a big screen production, but the performances weren't that good at all. The captain's (or Jefe's) tone of voice and accent are anything but Cuban. I have never heard anyone, civilian or military, talk the way he did throughout the whole movie. It was plain weird, to say the least. And the things he said paint a somewhat distorted view (in Cuba no one ever called the President by his last name -he was always 'amicably' called Fidel, etc.). Survivors of such "re-education camps" have said the talk they received was very minimal. The "soldier" uniforms do not reflect the time neither. They look more like insurgents than military corps. Although I place the timeline at late (very late!) 1959, the Cuban army was better dressed at that time, and only the "Jefe's" hair was long, not the soldiers. There were no AK-47s in late 1959 in Cuba. Overall, interesting idea for a movie (one I haven't seen before), but mediocre short otherwise.

A very interesting film. It's well shot, and has substance (cinematography, direction, editing, story -all professionally executed). I was impressed with George Cruz' performance as "Jefe". Gabriel Oliva also did very well as "El Soldado". If I had to say something negative about this film, I'd probably say that not all spoken words sounded "Cuban" enough for me, but that's a minor issue with this particular project. I'm sure most people won't even notice it (unless they're familiar with the Cuban dialect). Anyhow, great film by this team. I look forward to seeing more of their work.
